Below is the website to a thesis, which deals with the economic profitability of a seed orchard, seems relevant to the work at SkogForsk to document background information for the question if and when more seed orchards should be established in Sweden.

There is a remarkable nice row of events in forest genetics between Nov 17 and Dec 1. Three dissertations and one symposium (22nd Nov as earlier announced) besides some smaller things!!!

Avhandlingens titel är "Early Testing of Adaptedness to Temperature and Water Availability in Pinus sylvestris (L.) and Picea abies (L.) Karst.". och opponent är prof. Francis Yeh från University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

Adolfo Bila kommer att disputera fredagen den 1 december, kl 10.00 i Hörsal Björken, SLU
i Umeå, på en avhandling med titeln: Fertility Variation and its Effects on Gene Diversity in Forest Tree Populations
Opponent är Dr Erik Kjaer, Danida Forest Seed Centre. Humlebaek, Danmark.

Besides these bigger issues, there is also, a meeting with the committee which search a replacer for Gösta, a tree breeding course, a meeting with föreningen, some symp in Finland, and a long row of visitors. At Dept of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology in Umeå there will be a Forest Genetics seminar day Nov 28 (start 9.15) and an international day when four foreign breeding programs are presented Nov 16 (start 9.15). Some really crowded weeks!

Note that the latest thesis of my students, including Adolfo Bila (and also the thesis of Johan Westin, who asked me to place it where, as where is no more suitable place on the web) is available at my web site.

The homesite of the Academy of Engineering (IngenjörsVetenskapsAkademin) is

From where you can get movies from a discussion about Transgenetics in forest trees in late September. If you have no movie-player you can install it from the site.

A collegue told me that I should find interesting information about GMO at the bottom of a Greenie page. For curiosity I searched the bottom at

http://www.greenpiece.org/

It made me actually radically revise my views about Green Piece - they seem VERY open to critics and seem to have a wonderfully stimulating debate climate about their own possible problems and short comings... all this scrap you read in newspapers seems distorted and malicious, I thought..... for some minutes.... But when......... Do you get the riddle hidden around here? When tell me.... No-one of a few I tried it on got the point......
