Seed orchards

 

IUFRO WP 2.09.01 Seed Orchards will hold a conference from September 8 to 11, 2009 in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.

♠ Scope of the conference

The aim of the conference is to present recent advances and to review the state-of-the-art concerning, techniques and methods related to genetics of seeds and seed orchards; in particular the link between long-term breeding and seed orchards, management of seed production; flowering; injuries and protection; economics; seed management, physiology and technology, seed dormancy; testing and storage; gene conservation. Aspects could impact on forests and ecosystems at the stand, the landscape, the national and the global level. Of special interest is seed orchards in the perspective of changing environment and global warming. The main theme of the conference was suggested to be seed orchards and the link to long-term tree breeding in response to climate change

♠ Contributions

Participants who intend to make oral and/or poster presentations are requested to submit electronically abstracts for selection and allocation to the Conference secretary (kangks@forest.go.kr). These abstracts written in English must not exceed 500 words and must include the following information: title of paper, full name and affiliation of author(s), postal address and email.

♠ Proceedings
P
resented contributions will be offered to be published in a conference proceeding. Papers should be submitted before November 30, 2009. There will come instructions for the format of the submission to the proceedings. The contribution must have been presented by one of the authors to be accepted for the proceedings.

♠ Travel information

The meeting is planned for international participants to arrive at September 8 (or 7) and leave at September 12. Those who arrive at Incheon(Seoul) international airport probably need to transfer to a domestic flight to Jeju international airport There are many shuttle limousines and it takes about 20 minutes from Incheon (international) to Gimpo (domestic). You can buy some local valuta as you may need that for local transports and the registration fee. By the way, Did you know that   Seoul Incheon Is top-ranking among world’s airport, that is comforting for visitors in September. It shares topranking with three other Asian airports  http://www.airlinequality.com/AirportRanking/5-Star.htm.

There are direct flights from Beijing, Tokyo and Hong Kong to Jeju international airport. So it could be the best connection if participants transfer at Beijing, Tokyo or Hong Kong. There is a frequent shuttle (limousine) bus service from the Jeju international airport to the HANA hotel. The bus fare is about 3 US$.

 If you want to stay extra days in Seoul (or other cities), please keep in touch with the conference secretary, something will be arranged in Seoul the days after the conference.

(Passport and Visa) Any foreign visitors wishing to enter the Republic of Korea must have a valid passport and may need a Korean visa before coming. People from many countries who want to visit Korea temporarily are permitted to enter without a visa according to visa-exemption agreements, or in accordance with principles of reciprocity or national interest (please visit the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Immigration Bureau).

(Weather in Jeju, Korea) Jeju has a mild oceanic climate throughout the year with the smallest annual temperature range in the country. Information on weather and tour could be obtained from http://english.tour2jeju.net/main/index.php

♠ Registration

There is no specific registration form. Those who want to take part in the Conference should send registration information with title, full name, mailing address, presentation type suggested (oral or poster), special request etc to the Conference secretary.

Ø      Registration fee : 200 US$ (before May 30, 2009)

Ø      Registration fee : 250 US$ (after May 30, 2009)

Ø      Accompanying person : 150 US$

Registration fee includes 3 lunches, 3 diners, 4 refreshments, 2 half-day field excursions, conference proceeding and poster panel.

We don’t have on-line registration system now, so please consider to pay it on-site, but please register as early as possible. Local organizing committee will give you the receipt of the registration fee payment. You cannot pay the registration fee with a card, but only cash, and Korean money is preferred.

 

♠ Accommodation

Local organizing committee arranged a HANA hotel as an official accommodation for the Seed Orchards conference 2009. They offer a special price 70US$ for one room (standard twin or double) per night. The price includes tax, breakfast, internet and shuttle service. It takes a few minutes (about 5 min by the shuttle) to the conference venue, and there is a direct airport bus from Jeju international airport (about 30 min) to the HANA hotel. The hotel accepts payment by card. Direct reservation from abroad could be difficult, so the Conference Secretary will take the reservation from participants and then arrange the hotel. Participants are able to stay some days more before or after the Conference if they wish.. Two persons might share the room at the same price and they will also offer the same price a few day before and after the conference. It may happen that the hotel fills up, if so rooms are shared on a first come first served bases to registered participants, so that may be a reason not to wait with the registration till the last moment. Those who want to stay in luxury hotels, then there is the other choice, but the price would be more than double or triple.

 

♠ Field excursions

Two half-day field excursions are in the program and those are including a few stops at historical and environmental places including seed orchard sites.

♠ Miscellaneous

Seed orchards are the most important interface between forestry and tree breeding. Seed orchards are one of the tools in the fight against global warming, and a better seed orchard means a better future. During the conference, an IUFRO WP business meeting will be held to discuss and exchange ideas about the future, a seed orchard book, next meeting etc.
